Empyema Thoracis in a Neonate

Mayank Jain and Priya Jain

Empyema thoracis is a rare cause of respiratory distress in neonates. It is relatively common in children, especially in malnutrition and immmunocompromised states .Very few cases of neonatal empyema reported so far. Chest X-ray and USG thorax guide the diagnosis. Pleural fluid analysis confirmes the approach. Treatment includes antibiotics, chest tube drainage of pus, intrapleural fibrinolytics drugs, VATS. We hereby report a case of neonatal empyema caused by Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. Baby responded well following chest tube drainage along with administration of antibiotics.
